Here’s a novel thought: Writing is more fun than video games. Such is the mindset of a third grade student at the GVWP Writing & Technology Workshops, which ran from June 9-20 at Ripon Elementary and Ripon High. This is the ninth year of the program, which is sponsored by Great Valley Writing Project at CSU Stanislaus and is supported by individuals and local businesses. Since the program’s inception in 2005, it has expanded to locations in Ripon, Manteca, and Lathrop.
A unique aspect of this workshop, reports coordinator Melissa King, is that “over 40 classroom teachers wrote and learned alongside approximately 100 students in the demonstration classrooms.” King notes that at all grade levels, students used technology in their research, writing, and publishing.
Students in the K-2 classroom utilized short video clips, music, and walkabouts through nature to inspire them to write what teacher Amber Wethern describes as “copious amounts of text” in their reports on insects and plants. “Many students wanted to work through their breaks,” she adds.
Third graders observed live snails in the classroom and researched snails on the internet and in books in order to create and illustrated poems, stories, and research reports. “Students surprised us with their creativity and engagement,” reports teacher Robin Alexander.
Students in 4th and 5th grades created brochures and wrote restaurant reviews. According to teacher Annette Steele, the students used Google Docs and Kidblog to publish their creations.
In grades 7-12, students reflected on their true selves through writing and multimedia publishing. Teacher Elyce Silva reports, “Through their writing, they have been imagining a world where the impossible is possible.”
GVWP will offer one more summer workshop at River Island Technology Academy in Lathrop, which will be held from July 14-25. Complete details can be found on the workshop website – http://gvwp.weebly.com/info
